We realize that students have to read in all classes in order to be successful. Whether it's interpreting directions, solving a word problem, conducting a science lab, or simply reading a novel, good reading skills are essential for excellence. That's why one of our missions is to promote reading (nonfiction as well as fiction) across all the content areas and encourage teachers to use research based reading and writing strategies. Airport High School is an active participant in the South Carolina Reading Initiative (SCRI). A major piece of this initiative is the formulation of study groups comprised of certified teachers and administrators. Throughout the 2007-08 school year, twenty Airport High School teachers are participating in Airport's SCRI study groups. The facilitator of these classes is Diane Starnes, literacy coach. Airport High School is one of only 24 high schools in the state that is a SCRI school.
The SCRI dates back to 1999 and is a joint effort of the South Carolina Department of Education, the University of South Carolina, and the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). Please click here to read more about the SCRI.
